HVAC Technician - High Paying Jobs Without a College Degree

About the Role

The Elite Job is hiring experienced HVAC Technicians for residential service, light commercial, and commercial refrigeration work across the Southeast and Midwest. HVAC is one of the highest-paying jobs available in the United States without a college degree — certified technicians earn $32 – $48 per hour, and the demand for skilled HVAC professionals continues to grow as aging building systems require constant maintenance and replacement. EPA 608 certification and hands-on experience are your entry ticket — not a university diploma.

What You Will Do

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain residential and light commercial HVAC systems including split systems, package units, heat pumps, and mini-splits
  • Perform seasonal tune-ups, filter replacements, coil cleanings, and refrigerant checks on maintenance agreement accounts
  • Install new HVAC equipment including air handlers, condensing units, furnaces, and ductwork in new construction and replacement applications
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical failures including bad capacitors, failed compressors, refrigerant leaks, and control board faults
  • Recover, recharge, and document refrigerant usage in compliance with EPA 608 regulations
  • Commission newly installed systems and verify proper airflow, refrigerant charge, and thermostat operation before leaving the site
  • Communicate clearly with homeowners and building managers about system condition, repair options, and pricing before beginning work
  • Complete service tickets, maintenance reports, and warranty documentation accurately using a mobile field service application

What You Need

  • EPA 608 Universal certification — required for all refrigerant-handling technicians
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on HVAC installation and service experience
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and refrigeration system faults independently using meters, manifold gauges, and diagnostic tools
  • Physical ability to work in attics, crawl spaces, and on rooftops in summer heat and winter cold
  • Valid driver's license with a clean MVR — you will drive a company service vehicle daily
  • Customer service mindset — residential service techs interact with homeowners on every call
  • High school diploma or GED — no college degree required

Nice to Have

  • NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification in any specialty
  • Experience with commercial rooftop units (RTUs), chillers, or building automation systems
  • Sheet metal fabrication and ductwork installation experience
  • State HVAC contractor or mechanical license

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay of $32 – $48 per hour based on certifications and experience
  • Spiff bonuses and commission on system replacement sales presented to homeowners
  • Fully stocked company service van with fuel card — no out-of-pocket vehicle costs
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for full-time technicians
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays
  • Company-sponsored NATE certification and ongoing technical training through manufacturer partnerships

HVAC is one of the most recession-proof, in-demand, and well-paying technical careers you can build without a college degree. Hot summers and cold winters mean HVAC technicians are always needed — and the shortage of certified techs drives wages higher every year. At The Elite Job, we offer top pay, a company vehicle, and real career growth. Apply today — your EPA 608 card and your tool bag are all the credentials you need.

The Elite Job is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome HVAC technicians of all backgrounds and experience levels.
